About 'The Forge'

The building now known as ‘The Forge’ is several hundreds of years old and was a Granary, a Stable and the Forge for Dunraven Estates. It has been converted from one of the barns of Southerndown Farm, the main farmhouse being originally the Manager's home for the Estate which still owns most of the land surrounding Southerndown – all the farmland you can see from the upstairs window belongs to Dunraven Estate and is now tenanted out to farmers.

Dunraven Castle was built for the family of Dunraven on top of the hill facing the Forge - but this was burnt down in in the 1960s. The walled garden still remains and is a lovely walk from the Forge via the beach.

Southerndown Farm and all its buildings and land are now privately owned.

The Forge bedroom was originally the Estate Forge and used to shoe the farm horses and manage the Estate’s metalwork. The Stable bedroom was a two horse stable and the original doorway in this converted room has been left as a stable window. Upstairs the large window replaces the opening for the grain and from which it was lowered to the ground.

During the renovation many implements and tools of the original Forge were found and some of these are on the window sill above the stairs.
